Designer Gas Masks

Doing a random search Ironicly for cheap working gas masks, I found theses :

And subsequently an article about them, and some information on the designer...
Not the most practical thing to own... but some REALLY cool fashion and design went into the production of these things.

Quote : If you like post apocalyptic fashion mixed with high end runway then you will love these diamond studded gas masks. No need to wait for the mushroom clouds to start a revolution. The masks were the creation of designer Diddo Velema, with Gucci and Luis Vuitton.
Not something likely to rely on for protection from the harsh wateland.. but pretty damn cool if you ask me... Check it out!

Skin.Graft Fashion Show Vid

It is a bit old (VERY OLD)... But I have never heard of the company Skin.Graft so I thought I would give it a share to the other folks that had not.

A video from the article on the 2007 Post Apoc Fashion Show
Not exactly my style of Post Apoc fashion, but it has some
pretty cool stuff... Although I feel the men's fashion was BORING
and recycled seeming. Just my opinion.

Post-Apocalyptic Fashion Guide

Found a pretty cool post on IGN with a
Post-Apocalyptic Fashion Guide...

It touches on some great movies, and great elements of
some of the classic standards of the wasteland set in those
films.

Albeit very brief, and not quite through, its definitely worth a read.
So check out the link and give it a read!

Gas Masks - We All Love Em

All the children had to wear a gas mask in case of a gas attack
by the Germans. They tried to make the masks like Mickey Mouse
faces so the children would like them. But I didn't.
They had big ears on them.
-Gerald Scarfe

Although used much more as a fashion statement in culture today,
going all the way through the hiphop scene, to the goth scene, and
many other groups in between -- The gas mask is a practical
invention that has been in use for just about a hundred years,
and are still used today... and will likely continue to be...
Gas masks were issued to all British civilians at the start of World War Two. There was a very real fear in Britain that Nazi German bombers would drop poison gas bombs. Therefore, all civilians were issued with gas masks. The bombing of Guernica in the Spanish Civil War had shown what could happen when bombers got through. The government had planned for tens of thousands of deaths in London alone. An advisor to the government - Liddell Hart - told the government to expect 250,000 deaths in the first week of the war alone.

A true testiment that when new obsticles come mans
way, we find a way to beat it, and "filter" it out of our life...
Air born weaponry was a problem in the great wars (namely
starting April 22, 1915) so we decided it was time to engineer...
We came up the humble gas mask.

Or not so much came up with, but rather improved upon
the apparatus that miners, fire fighters, and divers previously used.

The original filters even used carbon to get rid of the nauxious gasses...
And we still use this in modern air scrubbers in industrial settings
to this day!

Although Gas Masks work a bit different today...
Here is a great video telling you how they do!

The gas mask is truly mans best friend for filtering out pollutants
in the air, and making it safe to step out side in unsafe conditions...
No one wants to breathe in mustard gas and feel their lungs instantly
 start to swell, and blister.

And this little filtered guy changed all that.

Albeit quite an awesome piece of fashion...
I think the draw to it really is the history.
The fact that so much life can be supported, and allowed
just from strapping some rubber, and a filter on your face.

Boy she has got some great history, and I urge you
to read the links below!

Post Apoc Survival "Fashion"

Now as much as I love promoting the movie fashion of the post apocalyptic genre... That is simply because of an affinity I have for it, more than the fact that it is true to the nature of survival... and that is something I still want to keep relevent on this blog...

Survival is key in the Apocalypse. Plain and simple. And I have found a great blog entry from http://www.postapocalypticsurvival.com/ talking about the REALITY of that situation. Having a mo-hawk is great (and I have one myself) but believe me... if the weather is hot enough when everything goes down, I don't want hair in my face, and I am sure as shit not finding gel to spike it... I am finding scissors to lop it off... And I am NOT breaking out my football shoulder pads, and gearing up to fight in Thunderdome... I am making sure I have long johns, and my Carhart for the long winters.

Quote : This style comes primarily from post apocalyptic movies, but you can be damn sure retards will dress like this if they wake up and there is no government. Its like the chance of a lifetime for the goth kids from high school to fit in.
Too bad you still won’t be fitting in junior.
He makes a great point that acting like an anarchist, and looking like someone who once tried to bring down a soiciety, is not exactly the type of person you want in the after-math trying to rebuild it. I do agree with that one hundred percent.

Quote : If you were a walking billboard for your dislike of society and authority before the apocalypse, what the fuck am I supposed to expect from you after society has collapsed?

Also going into detail about the people sporting far too much tacticool, paintball, airsoft, surplus gear... Yes it is great, it is cool looking even to an extent... However it makes you look like you are a threat... Could you imagine you and your beloved friends/family are at your house, and you see 4-5 of these xbox live, paintball freaks walking onto your property? I would break out the old FNC 223, and start shooting... I mean I may do that in general to anyone on my property... but I would NOT fire a warning shot at these soldier-of-fortune looking mother fuckers...

Quote : If it is just one of them I might try to have a conversation, but if they are with their air-soft buddies or Xbox live friends, my wife and I are picking them off at 500 yards just to be safe. Who knows, they could be modding or have hacks and I am not taking any chances. You could be a higher level than me, and that is unacceptable.
He later goes in to the REALITY of what people will likely be wearing after a real societal collapse... And I have to agree with him very much...
Lets just say it is more like this man than anything :

I am not saying I am going to stop posting about leather and feathers... but I think this is something a great deal of people can benefit from reading. The long and the short of the apocalypse is about Survival... We as a society cant survive by playing simulators, and spray painting lacross gear and adding spikes to it...
However in the mean time... Its a fun hobby... Just remember it wont protect you, and it wont save your life!

Fun Photo Article

While stumbling around the internet, I found a fun little photo
article with some great pictures... Although sadly not a great deal of substance.
But anything really that has a picture or two of Mad Max
in it usually is enough for me.
Add in a sexy lady or two with combat boots,
leather, and feathers --- and that does wonders!
for an articles enjoyability in my opinion!

See...
It already makes this blog entry more interesting!

Here is the Title Excerpt from the 'Article'

Post Apocalyptic Fashion: What You Need To Wear For The End Of The World

Your fashion sense doesn't have to suffer just because the world is ending. If we're going to go down in flames, we at least should go down in style. Here are tips to keep it fierce after the rapture.
See the link below for the full 'article'

And when Roger talks about the frightened ones running away from the bombs, I immediately thought of my days when I was young and I had to wear these gas masks.
-Gerald Scarfe

Check it out... as I said, its got a few great pictures...
Mostly Iconic stuff, but some interesting artistic stuff
thrown in the mix...
And I think there was more reading involved in my re-post
than there actually was on the whole photo spread...

Go rest your eyes...

Mask 365 - 'Kicked' Up Post Apoc Style

 MASK 365

This guy has some amazing stuff on his site, It embodies an amazing element of recycling,
namely turning Nike shoes and turning them into inventive gas masks.

Each one is different, and it holds an amazing unique quality that the shoes
themselves once possessed. He transforms them, but allows them to maintain
their own individuality.

I think what this guy is doing is great.
It shows a sleek, and streamlined urban "post apoc" feel.
And although they may not be functional, or anything you would
EVER see in an apocalyptic world.... they sure are a great and welcomed
art in the modern world. Check out some info about the artist below!

Summarized Bio (Taken from his Site) : Freehand Profit is a Los Angeles based artist who earned his name as a graffiti artist in DC and Northern Virginia. In 2005 he graduated Corcoran College of Art & Design with a BA in Fine Arts. Since then he’s rooted himself in LA’s Hip-Hop scene and has been working to forget what he learned in art school and make work without the pretentiousness that all too often accompanies “good” art.
